Go Underdogs!

Thursday night the 2008 NCAA Football season kicked off with some very lopsided victories. For example, Wake Forest decimated their moderate Baptist brethren from Baylor, 41-13. It seems to me the match-up between those two schools was a fair one. There are some exciting games to be played today between conference and state rivals, such as Illinois (20) vs. Missouri (6), Alabama (24) vs. Clemson (9), Washington vs. Oregon (21), Kentucky vs. Louisville, Idaho State vs. Boise State, and Colorado vs. Colorado State. There are also some solid match-ups between traditional powerhouse colleges, like Tennessee (18) vs. UCLA. What I don’t like about college football, though, is when big schools pad their schedules by scheduling games against smaller programs in order to pounce all over them and jump higher in the rankings. This is being done today in such games as Ohio State (2) vs. Youngstown State, Oklahoma (4) vs. Chattanooga, LSU (7) vs. Appalachian State, Auburn (10) vs. LA Monroe and Kansas (14) vs. Florida International. Personally, I’d like to see all the underdogs win their games against the powerhouse programs. It’s definitely possible to witness some upsets, as the University of Michigan found out last year. Ranked #5 in the pre-season polls, the Wolverines were shocked when they lost at home in Ann Arbor against Appalachian State. The Mountaineers won the game 34-32, the first win every by a team in Division I FCS (I-AA) over a ranked team in Division I FBS (I-A).

Go underdogs, and GO GATORS!

  1. Don’t think Gators are the underdogs. 49-O in the 3rd.

  2. No, the Gators aren’t the underdogs in that game. Should be interesting to see how they handle Miami next week.

  3. *sigh* My alma mater, Mississippi State lost to Louisiana Tech Saturday. Bummer!
